How to prepare Form USCIS I-9
About Form USCIS I-9
Form USCIS I-9, also known as the Employment Eligibility Verification form, is a document used to verify the identity and employment eligibility of individuals hired to work in the United States. It was developed by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which is a part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Both employers and employees are required to complete and maintain this form for each newly hired employee. The purpose of Form I-9 is to ensure that individuals being hired for employment are authorized to work in the United States. It also helps to prevent the hiring of individuals who are not legally authorized to work in the country. This form requires employees to provide certain personal information, such as their name, address, date of birth, and social security number. In addition, employees must also present specific documents to establish their identity and work eligibility, such as a U.S. passport, driver's license, Social Security card, or a combination of other acceptable documents listed in the form's instructions. Employers must carefully review the documents provided by the employee and complete their portion of the form, verifying the authenticity and validity of the documents. Form I-9 must be completed within three business days of the employee's first day of work. It is important to note that this form is mandatory for both citizens and noncitizens hired for employment in the United States, and employers are legally required to have an accurately completed Form I-9 on file for each employee they hire. Form I-9 helps employers ensure compliance with U.S. immigration laws and avoid potential penalties for hiring unauthorized workers.
What Is USCIS Form I-9?
Each individual who wants to be employed for a certain position on the territory of the U.S. has to prepare appropriate documentation confirming he/she is eligible for such employment. Once all the required documents are prepared, an applicant has to complete a form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. In addition to this template a person has to pra prospective employer with papers confirming his/her identity and eligibility. Further, he/she will inspect them if they are genuine and valid and then record relevant information on the document.
Both an employer and employee have to prepare a blank I-9. The employer should assist an applicant in completing the sample. It means he/she must ensure that all pages of the instruction and a list of acceptable documents, either in print or electronically, are available. The fillable template is divided into 3 sections:
-
the first one is filled out by an individual presenting the first employment day and his/her personal and status details certified with an individual's signature.
-
section 2 is related to verification of individual`s documents by an employer or his/her authorized representative.
-
section 3 is intended for reverification and rehires. It is always prepared and signed by a hirer.
If you have any questions related to how to fill out I9 Form refer to the instructions provided on the official website of the USCIS.
A completed I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification should be forwarded to an employer in electronically or in hard copy, but never to the USCIS or ICE.
